Silence is...
a despiriting confrontation, or an invitation to open?
In silence we are challenged
by nonexistence
from which we spend our days running.
Silence is a vertiginous prospect
the incomprehensible in a vacuum
the inevitable absence that our minds resist.
It opens the floodgates
to questions
to possibility
forcing us to hear ourselves think
to notice the incessant spin and hum.
A laughable din
a metastatic horror
the sense of an ending.
It's an invitation to rest
to make peace in peace
with uncertainty.
Retreat from the fog
find liberation
feel clarity beyond thought.
It is a point of arrival
when the exits are sealed
a sacred void.
Breathe without restriction
see without obstacles
feel without force.
Care for the quiet
Expand the silence
Let the dust settle.
*This photo was taken at around 5am on a yoga retreat at the Mill Retreat Centre in France. 5am throughout all seasons is my favourite time of day. It's the relatively soundless, unpeopled hour, where you can stretch out and be, for a glorious timeless moment, suspended for as long as life allows, just sitting, not doing, not thinking.*
